Carbon molecular sieve for PSA nitrogen generators

Time:2025-02-22

In the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) nitrogen production unit, the combined action of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) and activated alumina (AA) is the core element to ensure nitrogen purity, system stability, and operational economy.

The following are two adsorbent division systems in nitrogen production equipment:

1. Pre processing stage: Activated alumina plays the role of "protector":

- Deep dehydration: Reduce the dew point of compressed air from+40 ℃ to -40 ℃ to prevent liquid water from causing CMS pulverization (moisture content from 10000ppm to<100ppm)

- Remove CO2 : adsorb acidic gases (CO2 adsorption capacity reaches 12-15wt%) to avoid CMS chemical poisoning;

- Working temperature: 40-50 ℃ (initial temperature of compressed air);

- Adsorption cycle: 4-6 hours (switched synchronously with CMS tower);

- Regeneration conditions: hot blowing at 180-220 ℃, regeneration rate>93%.

2. Main separation stage: The selective ability of carbon molecular sieve:

- Separation of O2 /N2: Utilizing the faster diffusion rate of O2 molecules (0.346nm) compared to N2 (0.364nm), nitrogen enrichment achieved at 0.8-1.0MPa;

- Maintain high purity: single-stage PSA nitrogen purity can reach 99.5%, and two-stage system can reach over 99.999%;

- Adsorption pressure: 0.6-1.2MPa (optimal efficiency range);

- Adsorption cycle: 30-120 seconds (fast cycle to reduce energy consumption);

- CMS consumption: 0.8-1.2kg CMS needs to be filled for every 1Nm ³/h of nitrogen produced.

3. Technical parameters for two adsorbents working together:

- No activated alumina pre-treatment: CMS lifespan shortened by 60%, regeneration energy consumption increased by 45%;

- Activated alumina failure warning: Alarm triggered when export dew point>-35 ℃;

- CMS performance monitoring: Nitrogen purity drops by 0.5%, regeneration program needs to be initiated.
